Colleges are always looking for high quality students. And the definition of that varies on who is accepting students. Well being on the other end of things I can see right through all of the bs that colleges say. And I can tell you what they really look for in students.
High School Transcript
Your Transcript will tell two things. It will say what type of classes you have been taking. Whether those classes are up to the standards of the school. If you were taking art everyday all day for 4 years. The University may have some reservations that won’t allow you to matriculate through school. But if your classes are high quality with college prep or AP courses then they will have a better understanding of what you have been taking.
The other thing that your transcript will say is how you have been doing in your 4 years at highschool. If your grades weren’t good in the beginning, but got better as you matured. It shows that you have the initiative to make it through college and graduate. If your grades were good, dropped, then tried to do better while you were a senior they may see that you lost focus and tried to recoup towards the end.
Extracurricular Activities
While in highschool you don’t just need to be focused on the books. And that is hard to hear once I told you that you need to keep grades up in harder classes. But you need to make sure you are doing things outside of class. Sports or clubs are a great way to become a well rounded student. When you get to college there are going to be more clubs than you can count. And some of those clubs will benefit you academically.
Standardized tests
The SAT and ACT are two things that a lot of students dread because the score they get is a lot lower than what they were expecting. I will say that colleges are starting to get away from looking at these scores as the end all be all. But the scores still matter if you want to get merit based scholarships.
Take some tips on how to score high on these tests then do the best you can. They will still accept you with a low score, but you may have to take extra classes or extra tests to be placed in the higher or right course.
The Bottom Line
At the end of the day the things mentioned above are crucial with getting accepted into your dream college or university. But there is another factor that supersedes all the others. And that is money.
All Colleges really want is your money, and they have evidence of this by over-selling parking lots to accepting more freshmen than they know what to do with. So if you have the accolades you can do well in school. But don’t let the smiling faces and bright colors fool you. They are a business at the end of the day.
